Driver arrested after fatal crash on I-5 involving ambulance

The fatal accident occurred around 4 a.m. on I-5 southbound at the West Seattle Bridge when an ambulance heading to another accident was struck.

SEATTLE – The driver involved in a fatal crash on Interstate 5 in Seattle was arrested on suspicion of impaired driving, according to the Washington State Patrol.

According to Washington State Patrol trooper Rick Johnson, the accident occurred around 4 a.m. on southbound I-5 at the West Seattle Bridge when a vehicle broke down.

Johnson said one of the occupants got out of the stalled vehicle and was struck by a motor home. An AMR ambulance rushing to the scene was then struck by another vehicle, which was pushed into the first stalled vehicle and struck the pedestrian.

The driver who crashed into the ambulance was arrested on suspicion of negligent homicide and is being investigated for negligent homicide.

The road was closed for several hours while authorities investigated.

Trooper John Dattilo said Washington State Patrol resources were exhausted Sunday morning after three more serious drunk driving crashes occurred in Pierce County within a three-hour period and they had to call on other agencies for assistance.

“Drive sober. Please find another way home. Do not get behind the wheel,” Dattilo told KING 5.
