One dead and dozens injured in mass shooting in Ohio

One person was killed and at least 24 others injured in a mass shooting in the US state of Ohio.

The shooting occurred shortly after midnight local time (05:00 BST) in the city of Akron.

According to local media reports, officers discovered dozens of bullet casings and a firearm at the scene near Kelly Street and 8th Avenue.

So far, no one has been arrested or identified as a suspect and the investigation is ongoing, Akron police confirmed.

In a statement to the BBC, it was said that at least 25 people had been shot, one of whom was killed.

It also confirmed that many of the victims’ injuries were not life-threatening, but added that some were in a “more serious condition.”

Akron Mayor Shammas Malik and Police Chief Brian Harding later released a joint statement on social media vowing to “bring those responsible to justice.”

“Our city is shocked by the destruction caused by senseless violence,” it said.

“With more than two dozen victims, the pain and trauma are felt throughout Akron today as we search for answers.”

In addition, anyone with information about the shooting was assured that they could come forward anonymously.

“We need your voice to prevent further violence and retaliation.

“Our city government and our Akron Police Department will continue to make public safety a top priority as we seek to end gun violence in our community.”
