Response to pop-up alarm cost KC area residents $1 million

KANSAS CITY – Kansas City detectives are warning residents about a scam that has cost at least one person more than $1 million, according to an online statement from KCPD.

The scam begins with a pop-up on a computer screen with an error message that the computer is not working properly.

The pop-up contains a phone number to call for technical support. A scammer then tells the victim that their computer and financial data have been compromised. Someone posing as a government official contacts the victim and tells them to convert their assets into gold bars or transfer money to a Bitcoin ATM. The scammers even send a courier to pick up the gold, claiming they are protecting assets.

The victims police know of so far range in age from 65 to 80. KCPD investigators are working with other agencies across the country to solve the case. In the meantime, police want you to stay safe. If you see this scam and have not suffered any harm, click here to report it.
