Brussels Cycling Classic – Jonas Abrahamsen wins with late attack

Jonas Abrahamsen (Uno X Mobility) attacked late and won the Brussels Cycling Classic in a dramatic finale alone ahead of an attacking group.

The Norwegian overtook Martin Svrček from Soudal – Quick-Step just over 10 kilometers from the finish, but left him behind and was able to keep the field at a distance.

Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty) won the gallop in the chasing group ahead of Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck).

It was the first win as a professional for Abrahamsen, who had impressed with his attacking performance all season and almost won at WorldTour level in March.

“It was so nice to take my first professional victory alone,” he said after the finish. “At Tirreno-Adriatico I was so close when I was caught 50 meters from the finish. I just sprinted to take the win.”

His victory caps a good weekend for Uno X Mobility, which also beat Alexander Kristoff in Heistse Pijl yesterday. The Scandinavian team is preparing for its second Tour de France and will look to carry this form into the three most important weeks of the season. Abrahamsen’s performance comes after a stay at high altitude.

“The team was so good in the last race. I am so proud of the team. Kristoff won yesterday and Franco-Belge had all seven teammates finish at the end. It was nice for me to be in my first altitude training camp and to feel so strong afterwards,” said Abrahamsen.

Early in the day, a six-man breakaway group broke away from the peloton. The group consisted of Alexis Gougeard (Cofidis), Thibaud Gruel (Groupama-FDJ), Martin Svrček (Soudal – Quick-Step), Cerial Desal (Bingoal WB), Kamiel Bonneu (Team Flanders Baloise) and Riccardo Lucca (VF Group-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè). The group’s lead was around 3 minutes for most of the first half of the race.

In the middle of the race, two laps of the Muur-Kapelmuur and Bosberg double awaited the riders. 56 kilometers from the finish, the riders reached the Bosberg for the last time.

The pace was increased on the first climb to the Muur-Kapelmuur and the group’s lead shrank to 90 seconds as riders attempted to position their leaders on this key section. Liam Slock (Lotto DSTNY) attacked the peloton with just under 100 km to go and closed the gap to the leaders, making the breakaway seven strong.

On the second climbs of Muur-Kapelmuur and Bosberg, a selection was made and the peloton split into two groups. The leading group caught the breakaway at the foot of the Congoberg with 48 km to go and the pace was kept high as the group tried to keep the second, larger group behind them.

Intermarché-Wanty led the leading group together with Groupama-FDJ, supporting Biniam Girmay and Paul Penhoet respectively. The group behind closed in under the influence of Cofidis and Total Energies. The gap remained at around 20 seconds for most of the finale before widening in the final kilometers.

Marc Hirschi attacked on the Heiligekruiswegstraat 15 km from the finish and reduced the group. A counterattack was made by Svrček and Jonas Abrahamsen (Uno X Mobility), followed by Intermarché-Wanty.

Abrahamsen appeared to be the stronger of the two at the front, but the Slovakian probably paid the price for his efforts in the early breakaway. Abrahamsen attacked with 5km to go and left his companion behind, opening up a 20-second lead over the pursuers.

Abrahamsen was only four seconds ahead of Girmay and secured a memorable first victory.
