1 teenager dead, 4 others seriously injured in fiery crash in Wolcott – NBC Connecticut

A teenager died and four others were seriously injured in a fire accident in Wolcott on Saturday evening.

At around 10 p.m., officers received a report that a vehicle had left the road and struck a tree in the 700 block of Spindle Hill Road. While police were en route to the scene, dispatchers reported that the vehicle was now engulfed in flames.

When two officers arrived, they found the vehicle lying on its side against a tree on a small slope, with the front ablaze.

Investigators said that when police arrived, two juveniles were outside the vehicle and that three other juveniles were still inside the burning vehicle.

A firefighter arrived on the scene to help fight the flames with a fire extinguisher, while an officer reached through the broken rear window to pull out the rear passenger.

Additional firefighters arrived and put out the fire. Authorities said the two remaining teens were trapped in the front seats and were freed by rescue workers.

According to police, the 18-year-old driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The identity of the person was not disclosed.

The 17-year-old passenger in the front seat was reportedly in critical condition and was flown to Hartford Hospital by LifeStar. The 16-year-old, 18-year-old and 18-year-old in the back seat suffered serious injuries and were taken to the hospital for treatment.

The Naugatuck Valley Collision Investigation Team is investigating the accident.
