MUMBAI: A convict in the 1993 Mumbai serial bombings case was fatally attacked by five inmates at Kalamba Central Jail in Kolhapur on Sunday, police said.

At first glance, a dispute with other inmates over bathing in the bathroom area of ​​the prison led to the attack on 59-year-old Munna alias Mohammad Ali Khan alias Manoj Kumar Bhawarlal Gupta.

Khan was serving a life sentence in the serial bombings case.

“During the argument, some prisoners removed the iron cover from the drain and smashed Khan’s head, causing him to fall to the ground. He was taken to the hospital where he was declared dead,” the police officer said.

The attackers were identified as Prateek alias Pilya Suresh Patil, Deepak Netaji Khot, Sandeep Shankar Chavan, Rituraj Vinayak Inamdar and Saurabh Vikas.

Kolhapur police have filed a murder complaint against the five men.

They would be arrested soon, the official added.

The Mumbai bombings on March 12, 1993, which took place within a single day, killed 257 people and injured over 1,000.
