Fatal accident in Carroll County is being investigated by Maryland State Police

FINKSBURG, MD — A devastating crash occurred last night in Carroll County, leaving a local man dead. Maryland State Police are currently investigating the incident, which involved a 2022 Ford Explorer.

The driver, identified as 41-year-old Geoffrey Brittingham of Hampstead, was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical services. The crash occurred just before 11:30 p.m. on Emory Road at Cedarhurst Road. Brittingham’s 7-year-old son, who was in the back seat of the vehicle, was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore for treatment.

Preliminary findings indicate that Brittingham failed to stop for a closed construction site used in the North Branch Patapsco River bridge replacement project, resulting in a collision with the rear of a 2014 Volvo excavator and a nearby Mack dump truck. The construction site was closed at the time of the accident.

Authorities said no other injuries were reported at the scene. They also reminded motorists that the MD 91 bridge will remain closed for an extended period of time and advised them to use detour routes via MD 30 and MD 140.
