Oakland finds enough offense to eliminate Sale | The Arkansas Democratic Gazette

ATLANTA – Miguel Andujar went 4 for 5 with a homer, 4 RBIs and 3 runs scored and the Oakland Athletics ended Chris Sale’s seven-game winning streak with an 11-9 win over the Braves from Atlanta on Saturday.

Brent Rooker also homered and drove in four runs for Oakland. His two-run double in the sixth gave the A’s a 10-9 lead. No. 9 hitter Max Schuemann went 4-for-4 with three runs scored.

“From an offensive standpoint, it was one of our best games of the year,” Oakland manager Mark Kotsay said. “We obviously faced a really elite pitcher who is having a really good year. By putting the hitters together, we showed we had a really good game plan and we stuck to it.”

Marcell Ozuna hit his 17th home run and finished with four RBIs for the Braves, who lost 11 of 17. Michael Harris II had three hits and Matt Olson launched a two-run homer.

Michael Kelly (3-2) earned the win with a hitless inning. Dany Jimenez had a scoreless ninth for his first save of the season.

Sale had his worst outing with Atlanta, allowing 8 runs and 9 hits in 4 innings. He struck out four and walked one. This is the most points he has allowed in a game since 2019.

“Today was almost the exact opposite of what I did to be successful,” Sale said. “There was nothing specific.”

Sale, in his first season with the Braves, had a 1.17 ERA in his previous seven starts. The A’s, meanwhile, entered tied for 29th in the majors in runs and tied for 30th in batting average. Sale allowed as many runs in the first inning (two) as he did in five dominant starts in May. He gave up four more in the second thanks in part to a three-run homer by Andujar, and two more in the fourth on a two-run homer by Rooker.

“We did a good job of coming back from the mistakes he made,” Rooker said. “Obviously he doesn’t make a ton of them, and that’s why he’s so good and why his stuff is electric. He throws around the zone and doesn’t leave a ton up the middle. That’s what makes him who he is, on pitches, he made some mistakes up the middle, we were able to take advantage of that and put some good swings on them.

Jimmy Herget (0-1) suffered the defeat in relief of Salé.

BREWERS 4, WHITE SOX 3 (10) Willy Adames had an RBI single in the 10th inning and Milwaukee beat the White Sox to extend Chicago’s losing streak to 10 games. Adames also had a two-out, two-run single in the seventh inning.

GUARDIANS 3, NATIONALS 2 Ben Lively won his career-best fourth straight start and Kyle Manzardo hit a two-run bloop single to lead Cleveland past Washington. Lively (5-2) allowed 2 runs and 5 hits in 5 2/3 innings while striking out 4 and walking 1.

PADRES 7, ROYALS 3 Ha-Seong Kim hit a three-run double, Fernando Tatis Jr. and Kyle Higashioka homered and San Diego beat Kansas City. Randy Vasquez (1-3) started after Joe Musgrove was scratched a few hours before the first pitch due to right elbow inflammation and went five innings, allowing 3 runs and 4 hits with 5 strikeouts and 1 walk.

PIRATES 8, BLUE JAYS 1 Ke’Bryan Hayes and Bryan Reynolds hit two homers, Mitch Keller pitched six strong innings for his fifth straight victory and Pittsburgh ended a nine-game losing streak against Toronto.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

DIAMONDBACKS 10, METS 5 Christian Walker hit a grand slam in the third inning and Arizona routed New York to snap a season-high five-game losing streak. Arizona reliever Kevin Ginkel (3-1) left in the sixth after being hit in the left knee by Brandon Nimmo’s line drive, two days after Diamondbacks ace Zac Gallen strained his hamstring rights six pitches before the first game of the series.

PHILLIES 6, CARDINALS 1 Philadelphia took a 3-0 lead in the first inning, then put the game away with two more runs in the seventh. Alec Bohm hit a two-run double in the first and then scored on a double by Nick Castellanos. Bryce Harper hit a two-run homer for the Phillies in the seventh.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

ASTROS 5, TWINS 2 Framber Valdez pitched a no-hitter in the seventh inning and Yordan Alvarez hit two of Houston’s four home runs in the Astros’ win over Minnesota. Valdez (4-3) didn’t allow a hit until a single to start the seventh. He gave up the two hits and one run with four strikeouts in seven innings.

ORIOLES 9, RAYS 5 Ryan Mountcastle hit his seventh and eighth home runs and Baltimore cruised to a victory against Tampa Bay. Mountcastle had his first multi-homer game of the season and ninth of his career.

RED SOX 6, TIGERS 3 Enmanuel Valdez hit two homers for his first career multihomer game and drove in three runs to propel Boston past Detroit.

MARINERS 9, ANGELS 0 Seattle scored four runs in the fourth inning on JP Crawford’s grand slam, then added four more in the sixth to earn a victory. Julio Rodriguez finished 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs, including an RBI single. Luke Raley also homered for the Mariners.
