Police report shows rise in hate crimes in Toronto in 2023

There was a 47% increase in the number of hate crimes reported to the Toronto Police Service in 2023, according to the service’s annual hate crime statistics report released last week.

The results showed that 45% of hate crimes reported in 2023 were religiously motivated. When broken down by group, it turned out that the vast majority of hate crimes, about 130 incidents, were directed against the Jewish community.

Increase in hate crimes at schools

Most of the reported hate crimes, 21%, occurred on the streets. The report also found that 18% of crimes occurred in schools, a 23% increase from 2022. In addition, 14% of crimes occurred near or on public transportation, a 52% increase from the previous year.

The number of charges filed increased by 39% in 2023 compared to 2022. 59 people were charged with involvement in 61 incidents, for a total of 156 charges.

According to the report, between October 7 and December 31, 2023, the service arrested 23 people and filed 57 criminal complaints for hate crimes.

Between these dates, the service arrested nine people and filed charges in nine cases in connection with protests.
