Police officers mourn together for the deceased police officer Jamal Mitchell

MINNEAPOLS — Amid hugs and tears, officers from Minneapolis, St. Paul and the wider law enforcement community gathered not far from the site where Officer Jamal Mitchell lost his life to mourn and come together.

Mitchell represents the right position toward this profession in every respect, officials said during the meeting on Saturday afternoon.

“It was very hard, not only for me but for many others who knew him,” said Minneapolis police officer Krystal Scott.

Officer Scott is a friend of Mitchell’s. Scott said she met Mitchell through his volunteer work.

“I think he realizes he had people behind him who didn’t even know him,” Scott said.

Officers paid tribute to him Saturday afternoon with bouquets of flowers, shared personal stories about Officer Mitchell’s impact, and held hands in prayer.

“Police officers are human beings and they are suffering right now,” Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said. “I think he represents the vast majority of the men and women of this police department who continue to put their lives on the line for the people of this community.”

“No mayor wants to have this conversation,” said Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey.

Both Mayor Frey and Police Chief O’Hara said they had heartbreaking conversations with Mitchell’s grieving family.

“To let them know they are loved, supported and appreciated,” O’Hara said.

“Jamal Mitchell will forever be remembered in the city of Minneapolis,” Frey said.

A wave of support not only for an exemplary officer, but also for a father and hero.

“He was a pillar. He is our change agent. He should be a change agent for all of us,” Scott said.
