Court in Ikeja orders pre-trial detention for couple on sexual assault charges

A Sitting of the Ikeja High Court In Lagos State, a couple was sent to a reformatory on Friday after sexually abusing their 18-year-old niece.

Justice E. Kubeinje has remanded 31-year-old James Uwanah and 26-year-old Michelle Uwanah to Kikiri Correctional Centre to stand trial until June 25.

As New Telegraph learned, the couple are accused of conspiracy and sexual assault.

The prosecution, Insp. John Iberedem, told the court that the accused allegedly committed the offence on May 5 and 6 at No. 42, Oje Olorunfemi St. Igando, Lagos.

Iberedem claimed that the couple sexually abused the 18-year-old niece of the man who lived with them.

The prosecution alleged that the offence contravened sections 261, 263(1) and 411 of the Lagos State Criminal Laws, 2015.

Sexual assault is punishable by three years’ imprisonment, while sexual assault through penetration is punishable by life imprisonment if convicted.
