AGRA: A 29-year-old man, wanted in several cases, including the recent rape of a 65-year-old woman, was killed in a police operation in Mathura on Friday night. Police said Manoj Kumar alias Uttam “escaped from their custody” on Friday morning and “when police officers tried to arrest him in a rural area of the district at night, he fired at them”.

Mathura SSP Shailesh Kumar Pandey said on Saturday, “The police retaliated in self-defence and the criminal sustained injuries and died. We are checking his criminal record and investigating the matter.”

On May 26, Manoj allegedly raped an elderly woman on her way home. The accused offered her a lift on his bike and took her to a deserted place where he raped her. He also took away her jewellery. Subsequently, he was charged under Section 376 of the Penal Code (rape) and the police were on the lookout for him.

Acting on a tip-off on Thursday, police arrested him from the Jagdishpur underpass on the Yamuna Expressway. Seeing the policemen, he fired at them and tried to escape. In the retaliatory firing, he sustained injuries on his legs and was admitted to the district hospital at around 3 am. On Friday, around 11 am, Manoj fled from the hospital premises while going to the toilet. Police laid a trap to arrest him. Manoj was travelling alone on a motorcycle and when he saw the policemen, he started firing and was killed in the ensuing “encounter”.
