Woman hit and killed by semi-trailer on Interstate 64 in southern Indiana

The accident occurred around 1:30 a.m. on June 1 near the Lanesville exit on eastbound Interstate 64.

GEORGETOWN, Indiana – A woman was killed in a crash on Interstate 64 in southern Indiana early Saturday morning.

According to a press release from the Indiana State Police, Harrison County authorities were notified at approximately 1:30 a.m. on June 1 of an accident involving a semi-trailer truck and a pedestrian on I-64 near the Lanesville exit.

When officers arrived, they found an unconscious woman on the street. She was pronounced dead at the scene. According to police, two semi-trailers were also at the scene of the accident.

According to police, one of the drivers of the semi-trailer said he was avoiding a pedestrian on the eastbound lane, but accidentally veered off the left side of the road and struck a guardrail before coming to a stop on the westbound lane.

The second tractor-trailer driver told police he was traveling east on I-64 toward the Lanesville exit and was unable to avoid striking the pedestrian. The truck stopped on the right shoulder east of the overpass and remained at the scene of the accident.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the victim had just parked her vehicle on the eastbound exit ramp to Crandall Lanesville Road. Police say the woman walked toward the highway for an unknown reason before she was struck.

Investigators say they were unable to identify the victim because she was allegedly carrying several different IDs with different names and states. Investigators believe the woman was from Colombia.

None of the drivers were charged during the investigation.
