Jeremy Renner had “no stamina” when he returned to “Mayor of Kingstown” after an accident, but still did his own stunts

Jeremy Renner had “no stamina” when he returned to filming “Mayor of Kingstown” in January, a year after nearly dying in a collision with a snowplow, and was “surprised” that he could do his own stunts.

The “Avengers” actor told Los Angeles-based radio host Ellen K on Friday that he still hurts “everything,” specifying “every joint… It’s just more uncomfortable, I think.”

He explained that he had to reduce his work hours, which are normally 14 hours a day, when he first returned to the Paramount+ drama.

“Fourteen-hour days, in my opinion, are not good for anyone,” he said of the shorter hours a child actor works on set. “And the crew, I think everyone was OK with that, because I would fall asleep in the middle of the day, during scenes, and at the end of the day I was really tired. I just didn’t have any stamina.”

He later said he had “turned things around, gotten stronger and had a good season.”

The actor was “completely crushed” by his 6.3-ton PistenBully near his Nevada home on January 1, 2023, while attempting to tow a vehicle stuck in the snow after a severe storm.

The 53-year-old has undergone extensive physiotherapy over the past year after spending weeks in hospital and undergoing several operations.

Renner told People magazine this week that he was “not really at his best” when he returned for season three.

“In the beginning, I don’t think I had seen anybody – and these are all people I’d worked with for two seasons – so I didn’t really get a chance to talk to anybody,” Renner told the magazine about the show’s crew. “They didn’t know which version of Jeremy was coming back. I wasn’t in a really good place, to be honest. I really wasn’t.”

Renner suffered 30 broken bones, blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries as a result of the accident.

He added to People that the accident had meant an adjustment to his life. “Nothing will be normal or the way it was before the accident. I’m OK with that. I accept it,” he said.

Renner told Ellen K that although he initially had great difficulty on set, he did not want to force the production to cease because “a lot of people need the jobs,” especially in terms of the crew.

He added: “It’s the only game in the city of Pittsburgh.”

“I didn’t think I could do the fight scenes,” he admitted. During filming of the first episode of the third season, Renner “told the stuntman, ‘There’s no way I’m going to be able to do this.’ And then the day came and I put on these tennis shoes and I was like, ‘Let’s do this thing,’ and it worked out great.”

He added: “We didn’t need a stuntman and I was super, super happy that we could do it and I could do it.”

In a trailer for the new season, Renner said he was “surprised” that he was able to do fight choreography.

“The stunts were pretty brutal and it was surprising that I was even allowed to try them out myself. I wasn’t sure if I would be able to do it.”

He said they were surprised after filming the first episode that he “didn’t suffer any injuries.” “Maybe I hurt Hugh’s feelings,” he joked about Hugh Dillon, who plays Ian in the series.

“From where Jeremy was then to where we are today and seeing what he does, it’s a joy to be a part of,” Dillon, who is also an executive producer, said in the trailer. “Jeremy Renner does his own stunts, so that alone makes the film worth watching.”
