Warning: The following contains spoilers for Dead Dead Demons Dededede Destruction!!The TV adaptation of Dead, dead, demons, Dededede, destruction was a late addition to Crunchyroll‘s spring schedule, but it has all the makings of a big hit. With great art and animation surrounding a unique take on apocalyptic science fiction, it’s going to be a fantastically surreal sci-fi anime, just like all the trailers suggested.

Dead, dead, demons, Dededede, destructionThe anime of seems to live up to its hype, but strangely, major changes are made to the story. Crunchyroll’s new sci-fi anime reveals the manga’s final twist

Original series created by Inio Asano; Anime adaptation produced by Production +h

Dead, dead, demons, Dededede, destruction Episode #0 begins with aliens landing in Tokyo and causing massive destruction in an event that became known as “August 32nd.” Eight years later, a man named Nobuo Koyama awakens to find that an alien has taken over his body before dying and giving him back control. Nobuo must now travel through a post-apocalyptic Japan full of toxic air and a corrupt government to find his daughter Kadode..

All of this makes for an exciting and gripping start, but it should not start like this. While the story of Episode #0 is chronologically the first story arc of the manga, Dead, dead, demons, Dededede, destruction Episode #0 adapts the content of the last manga volumethus giving away both the secret of what happened to Kadode’s father and the true tone of the story. It’s unclear if the anime goes so far as to give away everything Nobuo does in the story, but overall these changes still completely alter the series’ narrative.

Why did Dead Dead Demon change its story?

The episodic adaptation of the series’ full-length film series has not yet revealed why it decided to reveal the manga’s biggest secrets

Dead Dead Demons Dededede Destruction Episode 0 Nobuo goes for a walk with Hako and Kimi

It is unclear why exactly, Dead, dead, demons, Dededede, destruction changed its story so fundamentally, but it is not impossible to guess. As unique and compelling as the story may be in its original form of a slice-of-life story with an alien threat sitting ominously in the background, it is not the kind of story with universal appeal. Based on that, Dead, dead, demons, Dededede, destruction would have perhaps wished for a more exciting beginning for the anime to involve people morewhich is why the first episode began with what is technically part of the final story of the manga.

Assuming that was the idea, it’s not necessarily a bad way to go about things. While the story loses its main appeal if it starts at that point, creating a different and more accessible way to immerse people in the story can give it new appeal and help it gain a level of popularity it might not have had otherwise. It may not be the direct adaptation that fans of the manga were expecting, but Dead, dead, demons, Dededede, destructionThe TV adaptation is nevertheless very promising.
