June 1 (UPI) – A boil water warning remains in effect in much of Atlanta following the rupture of a major water main on Friday morning.

The Atlanta Department of Watershed Management said the break occurred around 8 a.m. EDT near the intersection of Joseph E. Boone Boulevard Northwest and James P. Brawley Drive.

Officials said the break occurred when three pipelines carrying large amounts of water into the city caused a break in a main line, leading to water outages and low water pressure in large parts of the city center.

There is currently no timetable for restoring water supplies.

DWM officials reported Friday evening that two additional fractures were discovered at West Peachtree and 11th Streets and Atlantic Drive. These fractures are reportedly not connected to the main fracture.

The crisis impacted restaurants and businesses and left many households without a reliable water supply.

The DWM shut off water supplies in large parts of Atlanta on Friday evening and urged residents to boil their water “out of an abundance of caution.”

The order to boil water was still in effect on Saturday.

“DWM crews are working diligently to repair the water main at the intersection of Joseph E. Boone Blvd and JP Brawley,” the department said in a Facebook post Saturday afternoon.

“We apologize for any inconvenience.”

In downtown Atlanta, several weekend events were canceled or postponed, including a performance by rapper Megan Thee Stallion at State Farm Arena.
