Missing North Carolina couple died of gunshot wounds in Ashanti Alert center, Davie County officials say

YOUR FOCUS. GOOD MORNING AND THANKS FOR BEING WITH US. I’M STAR CONNOR ALONG WITH DYLAN BUTLER AND DYLAN. I HAVE TO SAY, THE TEMPERATURE WAS A LITTLE CONFUSING THIS MORNING. A LITTLE CONFUSING, YES. THAT CAME TO YOU BY SURPRISE, DIDN’T IT? YES. YOU’RE WALKING OUT THE DOOR. YES. JUNE 1ST, I KNOW. RIGHT. YOU OPENED THE DOOR. YOU’RE WALKING OUT. WHOA. IT SOMEHOW HITS YOU. COAT. YES, A JACKET. I’M NOT A BAD GUY. NOT A BAD IDEA. I DON’T BLAME YOU. IT FEELS LIKE FALL OR SPRING. LIKE SPRING. MARCH OR MAYBE EVEN OCTOBER OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. YES. This morning we had temperatures around 5 degrees, but now it’s already over 10 degrees, so we’re feeling a little more comfortable because the sunshine has had some time to improve our air. It’s almost 15 degrees in the Triad area now, so not too bad, but some outlying places like Mocksville, Eden and Danville, Virginia, are a little cooler. Martinsville, Virginia is a little cooler, with temperatures around 10 degrees and even a few over 5 degrees. Right now the skies are beautiful. You can see some contrails from the planes flying overhead. UH, PEOPLE OUT SPACE MAYBE GOING FISHING ON BLUES LAKE THIS MORNING. IT’S A BEAUTIFUL DAY TO GET OUT THERE. AND ALSO THIS AFTERNOON, IF YOU WANT TO DO SOMETHING OUTSIDE THIS WEEKEND, TODAY IS THE DAY TO DO IT. JUST SOME HIGH, THIN CLOUDS OVER US. BUT FURTHER TO THE WEST WE’RE STILL SEEING SOME CLOUDS AND A LOT OF RAIN DIRECTLY OVER THE DEEP SOUTH. MISSISSIPPI, ALABAMA, INTO TENNESSEE ON A WARM FRONT. THIS ACTIVITY IS MOVED VERY SLOWLY, SO I DON’T EXPECT THIS TO MOVE INTO THE CAROLINAS LATER TODAY. BUT WE’LL SEE THOSE CLOUDS FROM THIS SYSTEM START TO FLOW OVER US IN THE AFTERNOON. So it’s dry again today. We’ve got a southerly wind that’s pushing temperatures up a couple degrees higher than yesterday. I think it’ll be a high of 26 degrees this afternoon. And you’ll notice again later that clouds are rolling in and really starting to thicken a bit towards the evening. But it’s dry. Humidity is still low. It’s going to be a nice day. Unfortunately, I have to talk about some changes because the summer weather pattern is coming back. EVEN AS SOON AS TOMORROW, WITH HUMID CONDITIONS EXPECTED TO RETURN AND CONTINUE ALL WEEK, I CAN SEE A LOOK AT THE REST OF THE FORECAST TO COME. THANKS, DYLAN. NEW THIS MORNING: EDEN POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING A BANK ROBBERY THAT HAPPENED YESTERDAY. LAW ENFORCEMENT ARE LOOKING FOR THIS MAN. THEY SAY HE WALKED INTO THE TRUIST BANK ON SOUTH FAIRBURN ROAD AND SHOWED THE ASSISTANT A GUN BEFORE DISAPPEARING WITH AN UNDERSTANDING AMOUNT OF MONEY. NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED AND THE SUSPECT IS BELIEVED TO BE A SLIM WHITE MALE UNDER 6 FEET TALL. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION REGARDING THIS ROBBERY OR THE LOCATION OF THIS SUSPECT IS ASKED TO CONTACT EDEN POLICE. WE HAVE LEARNED NEW DETAILS REGARDING A SHOTGUN. CHARLOTTE POLICE SAY THEY KILLED FOUR POLICE OFFICERS LAST MONTH. OUR KELLY KENDALL WAS IN CHARLOTTE LAST NIGHT TO ATTEND THE POLICE PRESS CONFERENCE. POLICE EXPLAINED WHERE ALL THE SHOOTING WAS COMING FROM. THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME POLICE HAD DEPICTED WHAT INVESTIGATORS CALLED A “SLOWLY CHANGING AND CHAOTIC SCENE.” THEY’RE STILL GOING THROUGH ALMOST 10,000 PIECES OF EVIDENCE, BUT THEY SAY ONE THING IS CLEAR: THERE WAS NO FRIENDLY FIRE AND THE SUSPECT, TERRY HUGHES, WAS THE ONLY SHOOTER. POLICE WERE EXPOSED TO GUNS FROM THE SUSPECT FOR OVER 17 MINUTES. SEVEN, 18 MINUTES. THAT’S HOW LONG POLICE HAD BEEN INVOLVED IN A SHOOTOUT WITH SUSPECT TERRY HUGHES, ACCORDING TO INVESTIGATORS. THAT’S AN ETERNITY. THEY WERE INVOLVED IN A SHOOTOUT WHICH USED THOUSANDS OF PIECES OF EVIDENCE. POLICE HAD DESTROYED THE IDEA THAT MULTIPLE GUNS WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE EIGHT OFFICERS SHOT ON APRIL 29. THIS INVESTIGATION HAS SHOWN THAT THE ONLY BULLET CASINGS COLLECTED FROM THE CRIME SCENE IN THE HOUSE MATCHED THE GUN FOUND NEARBY. THE SUSPECT WAS IN THE FRONT YARD WHERE HE WAS DECIDED. Instead, investigators laid out how Hughes used an AR-15 rifle to wound officers from the second floor of his house during those 17 minutes. The gunman was able to walk between three windows. The investigation determined that Hughes jumped out of a second floor window with two pistols during the shooting. Officers shot him, but because they still saw movement inside the house, they continued firing upwards into the house. THEY USE GUNS FIRE AT TWO TARGETED LOCATIONS FROM WHERE THE SUSPECT FIRED SHOOTS TO FACILITATE THE EVACUATION OF OUR WOUNDED OFFICERS, INVESTIGATORS SAY. BY THE END OF THE SHOOTING, LAW OFFICERS HAD EXPERIENCED A LOSS OF LIFE NEVER SEEN BEFORE. IT WAS AN UNPRECEDENTED TRAGEDY FOR THIS COMMUNITY, POLICE STRESS. THERE IS STILL A LOT OF DOING TO BE DONE IN THIS INVESTIGATION. BUT IN THE MEANTIME, CRIME CHIEF JOHNNY JENNINGS SAYS THE DEPARTMENT IS STILL RECOVERING FROM THE SHOOTING AND CALLS IT THE MOST TRAGIC TIME IN THE DEPARTMENT’S HISTORY IN CHARLOTTE. I’M KELLY KENDALL, WXII 12 NEWS. OFFICIAL SAYS THE EVIDENCE USED IN THIS INVESTIGATION INCLUDES 128 BODY WORN CAMERAS AND 8903 IMAGES, 65 POLICE OFFICER INTERVIEWS AND 765 PHYSICAL EVIDENCE PIECES TO BE PROCESSED. YOU CAN WATCH IT
