Smyrna man arrested for drunk driving and gun possession

DEWEY BEACH, De.- A Smryna man was arrested for drunk driving and weapons possession. Early on the morning of June 1, Dewey Beach police saw a black car without headlights driving south on Coastal Highway.

A traffic stop was conducted and the driver was identified as 31-year-old Darren Jeffcoat.

During the investigation, police discovered that Jeffcoat did not have a driver’s license and had three warrants out for his arrest for traffic violations.

When police searched the vehicle, they found a 9mm pistol with a fully loaded magazine and a cartridge chamber, as well as a small amount of marijuana.

Through further investigation, officers learned that Jeffcoat is prohibited from possessing a firearm.

Jeffcoat was transported to the Dewey Beach Police Department for processing, where a blood sample was taken pursuant to a search warrant from Justice of the Peace Court No. 7.

Jeffcoat is charged with two counts of possession of a deadly weapon by a person not authorized to do so, concealed carrying of a deadly weapon, driving while intoxicated (DUI), third offense, possession of a firearm while under the influence of alcohol, and failure to turn on headlights when required to be used.
