Motorway closed due to major damage

Due to an incident this morning, parts of the M4 were closed in both directions for hours. Emergency services were on site.

Officers attended an incident on the M4 between Junction 37 Pyle and Junction 38 Margam which resulted in the closure of both sides of the motorway at around 12.26pm on Thursday 23 May.

A South Wales Police spokesman said: “Officers are dealing with an incident involving a man on a bridge over the M4 between Pyle and Margam (junctions 37-38).”

Traffic Wales reported that the M4 was closed in both directions between J37 Pyle and J38 Margam, with all traffic halted from 12.26pm until approximately 3pm.

While the emergency services tried to clear the initial traffic jam and open all lanes, several stranded vehicles had to be cleared by the traffic police.

Further lane closures were put in place, which Traffic Wales said was “due to a number of other broken-down vehicles on the westbound carriageway”.

By 6:30 p.m. on Thursday evening, traffic was largely cleared.

South Wales Police have been contacted for further comment on the incident.
