This is the fourth fire incident at Bhandwari landfill in the last two months.

Gurgaon:

A fire broke out at the Bhandwari landfill on the Gurugram-Faridabad road on Saturday afternoon, officials said.

According to authorities, a fire was reported at around 2:30 p.m. More than 10 fire engines from the fire stations of Sector 29, Sector 37, Udyog Vihar, Bhim Nagar, Sohna and Faridabad and over 25 firefighters were deployed, they said.

“It took more than five hours, but now the fire is under control. As a precautionary measure, we currently have a team at the spot,” said Gulshan Kalra, the chief fire officer.

This is the fourth fire incident at Bhandwari landfill in the last two months.

The locals have demanded that the Gururgam Municipal Corporation (MCG) and the district administration bring the situation under control immediately and also demand regular monitoring of the waste disposal station.

“Fire often breaks out in extreme heat. The real cause of this is the formation of large amounts of methane gas. At the same time, the fire is caused by sparks generated due to friction with the glass fragments present in the garbage. A detailed investigation has been ordered into the incident,” said Dr Naresh Kumar, Deputy Commissioner, MCG.
