IGP Byakagaba suspends NUP rallies after three people died in procession

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Abbas Byakagaba has cancelled all National Unity Platform (NUP) rallies, just two days after they were approved.

The decision came after the chaotic protest march by NUP on Masaka Road on Friday, which left three people dead and resulted in several accidents.

“The police command has decided to stop all further consultancy activities of the NUP as a party with immediate effect until this matter is finally investigated and resolved,” police spokesman Fred Enanga announced on Friday on behalf of IGP Byakagaba.

Byakagaba referred to NUP’s “lawlessness” and disregard for public safety, pointing out that the party’s convoy had caused traffic jams and accidents along the Kampala-Masaka highway.

Although Bobi Wine warned his supporters to drive carefully, the procession descended into chaos, leaving three people dead in Maya, Nsangi sub-county.

ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, deputy spokesperson of the Kampala Metropolitan Police, attributed the fatal accident to reckless driving and excessive speed by NUP supporters.

More than 10 people were injured and taken to various health facilities.

IGP Byakagaba warned that the police would not tolerate any further disregard for public order and security.

“Anyone who acts against public order and security will be held accountable according to the laws of the country,” he stressed.

The suspension of NUP rallies is a significant setback for the party, which had planned a rally in Mityana township on Tuesday.

Bobi Wine and his supporters were accused of violating the agreed guidelines for their consultation meetings, which led to the harsh police crackdown.

With his assumption of office, the IGP’s swift action against the NUP rallies signals a tougher stance on law and order, urging the public to remain vigilant and respect the law to avoid consequences.
