Heavy rainfall leads to risk of flooding

MERIDIAN, Miss (WTOK) –

Our area continues to experience unsettled weather with periods of rain at altitude, so don’t go anywhere without an umbrella this weekend… but it won’t be a washout weekend.

The chance of rain is highest on Saturday morning (before noon) compared to Saturday afternoon. There will be showers and thunderstorms in the second half of the day, but these will be more scattered (hence many dry spells). However, if storms do form, there is a small chance that one or two storms could “pack a powerful punch”… mainly in the form of damaging wind. Make sure you have ways to receive severe weather warnings.. Maximum temperatures are below average, ranging from low to mid 27 degrees Celsius.

On Sunday it will not be as rainy as on Saturday (especially in the morning). Nevertheless, isolated showers and thunderstorms are possible. Maximum temperatures will be around 30 degrees. Total rainfall is estimated at 1-3 inches through Sunday. Localized flooding is possible. Remember to never drive across a flooded road and download our free WTOK Weather App to stay up to date with flood or severe weather warnings: https://www.wtok.com/page/download-our-apps/

This weekend also welcomes the month of June and the not so welcome start of hurricane season.. It is expected to potentially break records in terms of named storms, but it is important to always prepare for each season as just one storm is enough to make the season a nightmare for a region. Here’s how to prepare: https://www.noaa.gov/hurricane-prep

Rain is expected to continue into next week, but the chance of rain will be rather unsettled. A cold front is expected to cross our area by Thursday, which will bring drier weather to our forecast until next Friday.
