Man shot in accident with off-duty LAPD officer

A 37-year-old father of three died at the scene of the accident and the off-duty police officer was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.



LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA — Authorities on Friday were investigating a fatal shooting involving an off-duty Los Angeles Police Department officer in Ontario, which may have been an incident of road rage.

The off-duty officer was taken to hospital with unspecified injuries that were not considered life-threatening, and a second man was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Ontario police.

According to Ontario police, the shooting occurred around 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of Euclid Avenue and Sixth Street.

Officers found a man with a gunshot wound at the scene, who was pronounced dead at the scene, Ontario Police Corporal Eliseo Guerrero told City News Service.

The trigger for the shooting was not immediately clear.

“The investigation is still in its early stages. The (LAPD officer) is cooperating with the investigation,” Guerrero said.

KTLA identified the man killed as Hugo Cachua, a 37-year-old father of three.

Guerrero did not say what led to the shooting, but confirmed that several witnesses called police to report the altercation.

According to the witness’s statement, it started with minor damage to the vehicle’s bodywork, which escalated into a violent confrontation.

“The Los Angeles Police Department is aware of an officer-involved shooting involving a Los Angeles Police Officer in the City of Ontario this evening. The Los Angeles Police Department is cooperating fully with the investigation,” the LAPD said in a statement.
