Vigil for woman killed in hit-and-run on east side

INDIANAPOLIS – An Indianapolis family is searching for answers as police search for the suspect in a fatal hit-and-run crash.

On Friday evening, the community came together to remember the victim who is at the center of the investigation.

More than 100 people gathered at the corner of 16th and Fenton on Indy’s east side to remember 31-year-old Ambra Alcozer.

Family and friends said Ambra was a loving mother who cared for everyone. She leaves behind a 6-year-old daughter.

“This means a lot to me because Ambra was a special person. She touched the hearts of many people,” said Ambra’s mother Shawn Alcozer.

According to IMPD, it all happened around 10 p.m. on Monday when Alcozer and her boyfriend were driving a go-kart through the grass and were hit by an SUV.

The driver of the SUV fled and has not yet been found. Ambra’s boyfriend survived, while Ambra died at the scene of the accident.

“She was my best friend. She was my backbone. My anchor, my contact person. She was the only one who could calm me down,” said Alexandra Boyer.

Balloons hang from a cross and memorabilia line the street. It is a painful reminder of the loss of a mother, daughter and loved one, but also a clear message from a family that will not give up.

On Friday night, many dressed in orange, Ambra’s favorite color, asked the question “Why?” in ways they never intended to ask.

“I hope we catch the perpetrator because she didn’t deserve this at all and he has to pay for taking our family away from us,” Shawn said.

IMPD said it found the SUV in question on Friday, but did not say whether any arrests had been made.
