DPS identifies Mesa man shot and killed by officers on Loop 101

The Arizona Department of Public Safety on Monday released the name of the Mesa man killed by a police officer on Sunday.

An as-yet-unnamed police officer shot and killed 44-year-old Lemonte Anthony Knobelock after DPS said he pointed a gun at the officer.

DPS did not provide any further information about the officer or Knobelock, only issuing a statement on its website saying, “Further details regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident will be available upon completion of the investigation.”

The officer, whose actions are being investigated by the DPS Major Incident Division, walked to a car parked on the shoulder of southbound Loop 101 near University Drive around 2 a.m. Sunday. The police officer approached the car because a car matching his description had been cited for erratic driving.

According to the department’s statement, the officer attempted to speak to Knobelock, but he refused to listen to the officer’s commands and refused to exit the car.

In a statement Sunday, DPS said the shooting was being investigated by the DPS Major Incident Division. It was unclear whether an outside agency was also conducting an investigation.
