PLYMOUTH, Massachusetts – One person died and two children were injured in an accident on Route 3 in Plymouth.

The accident occurred shortly after 5 p.m. Friday on southbound Route 3. A 2015 Nissan Rogue driven by a 50-year-old Plymouth man left the roadway, plunged down an embankment and ended up on its roof in the Eel River, according to state police.

The driver was flown by MedFlight to a Boston hospital, where he later died.

Also in the vehicle were two children, a 13-year-old girl and an 11-year-old boy. Both suffered serious injuries and are still in the hospital, state police said.

Officers are still trying to determine why the car left the road.

Officers closed the left and right lanes for about three hours while emergency crews investigated the accident. Traffic was able to use the hard shoulder during that time, state police said.
