Driver killed, children rescued from vehicle after rollover into river on Route 3

The driver of a vehicle that left a Massachusetts highway and ended up in a river has died from injuries sustained in the crash, according to state police. The crash occurred just after 5 p.m. on southbound Route 3 in the Eel River area. State police said three people, including the driver and two passengers, were trapped in the vehicle after the crash. Video from Sky 5 shows the vehicle in the water, covered with fallen tree branches. State police said their preliminary investigation indicates a 2015 Nissan Rogue was traveling southbound on Route 3 near the 10.6 mile marker. Police said the Nissan left the left side of the road and ended up on its roof in the Eel River. Plymouth Fire Chief Neil Foley said firefighters had to go into the river and use hydraulic tools to free the driver, a 50-year-old man. Police said the driver, who was from Plymouth, was flown to a medical facility in Boston, where he was pronounced dead. Two children in the vehicle, a 13-year-old girl and an 11-year-old boy, suffered serious injuries in the crash and are still hospitalized, according to state police. Foley said the process to extricate the driver from the vehicle took about 20 minutes. State police said it was unclear why the vehicle left the highway. The left and right lanes were closed for nearly three hours. Traffic was able to pass on the shoulder while analysis and cleanup were conducted. The cause of the crash was being investigated by Massachusetts State Police.

The driver of a vehicle that left the roadway of a Massachusetts highway and ended up in a river has died from injuries sustained in the accident, according to state police.

State police said their preliminary investigation revealed a 2015 Nissan Rogue was traveling south on Route 3 near the 10.6 mile marker.

According to police, the Nissan veered off the left side of the road and landed on its roof in the Eel River.
