Family mourns man killed by driver in Goodyear

GOODYEAR, AZ (AZFamily) — A family is in mourning after someone struck and killed a man who was walking home from a friend’s house in the West Valley.

According to Goodyear police, 25-year-old Devin Firth was killed on Memorial Day evening at the intersection of 167th Avenue and West Canyon Trails Boulevard, near Cotton Lane. Police said Firth was taken to the hospital but later died from his injuries.

According to Goodyear police, the driver who struck Firth was under 18 and may have been speeding.

The driver remained on site and spoke to the officers.

As of Friday evening, no charges had been filed and police are investigating the accident.

Firth’s family was devastated to learn what happened. Firth’s cousin, LaWanda Brice, says he will be missed.

“He was always here with my son,” said Brice. “They had a special bond. That’s why he was like my son. He was here a lot. Very friendly, very smart and very fun-loving.”

Brice says he is engaged and will be 26 in a few weeks. She said he was walking home from a friend’s house around 6 p.m. on Monday, a holiday.

“He’s just doing something that people do every day. He’s never going home. His mother will never hold her son or see a wedding,” Brice said.

Brice says Firth’s mother is devastated.

The family now has to pay for the unexpected funeral. Brice asks people to be careful on the roads and drive slower.

“Whatever you have to do, it’s not important enough to take someone’s life,” Brice said.
