Houthis fire missiles and drones from Yemen

The US military said on Friday that the Yemeni Houthis had fired two anti-ship missiles and a drone over the Gulf of Aden and four drones over the Red Sea. Three of the drones fired over the Red Sea were destroyed by US forces and one crashed into the sea, the US Central Command said. Centcom also said it had destroyed the drone fired over the Gulf of Aden. No damage or injuries were reported from the anti-ship missiles, it said.

US Secretary of Defense refocuses attention on security risks in China

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin sought Saturday to refocus attention on the threat posed by China in the Pacific, seeking to allay concerns that conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza are distracting from America’s security commitments in Asia. Austin, speaking at the annual Shangri-La Dialogue security summit in Singapore, met with his Chinese counterpart Dong Jun on Friday to ease tensions over issues including Taiwan and China’s military activities in the South China Sea.

Centre calls for preventive measures in light of bird flu reports in four countries

The Central Government has asked all states and Union Territories to take several preventive measures after four states reported cases of H5N1 virus. The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD) and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) issued a joint advisory on H5N1 for all states on May 20. All states have been directed to educate all healthcare workers and general practitioners about case definitions, signs and symptoms of avian influenza. States have also been asked to be alert for any unusual deaths in domestic poultry and if observed, immediately report them to the Department of Animal Husbandry for initiation of public health measures as per the National Action Plan on Avian Influenza.
