A woman died in a rafting accident on the Cache la Poudre River on Thursday.

At 12:55 p.m. Thursday, the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Operations Center received multiple emergency calls and initiated a 911 call to the Greyrock Trailhead on U.S. 14, according to a sheriff’s office news release.

Rescuers learned there had been an accident involving a group from a local rafting company. An adult woman was injured when the raft struck a bridge pillar, the release said. The woman, whose age and residence were not disclosed, was being resuscitated on the river bank when rescuers arrived.

All other members of the rafting group were able to leave the river and were uninjured.

An ambulance took the injured woman to a nearby hospital, where she was later pronounced dead, the news release said. Her identity and cause of death will be released at a later date by the Larimer County Coroner’s Office.

“This is a tragic loss that deeply affects a person’s loved ones and our entire community,” Captain Tim Keeton, who heads the Emergency Services Division, said in the release. “We will continue to support her family during the difficult days ahead. Thank you to our dispatchers, sheriff’s deputies, emergency services personnel, medical teams, victim advocates and partner agencies for their work during this incredibly difficult response.”

The sheriff’s office added that the raft became trapped in the pylon during the accident and may be visible until it can be safely removed.
