Death in Marin County Jail under investigation

Authorities are investigating the death of an inmate at the Marin County Jail.

A deputy saw the inmate in his cell around 2:10 a.m. Thursday when he needed medical attention, Sergeant Adam Schermerhorn said. The inmate was alone in the cell.

Officers attempted to save the life until San Rafael Fire Department paramedics arrived. The inmate was pronounced dead at 2:42 a.m., Schermerhorn said.

The occupant was Derrek Leeds, 43, of San Rafael.

The San Rafael Police Department and the Sonoma County Coroner’s Office are investigating the death.
