Giants Minor League Shortstop Anthony Tandron suspended for 56 games for drugs

NEW YORK: San Francisco Giants shortstop Anthony Tandron was suspended for 56 games on Friday after testing positive under Major League Baseball’s new doping program for minor league players who play outside the United States and Canada.

The performance-enhancing drug boldenone was tested positively in Tandron.

Tandron, an 18-year-old who signed a $77,500 signing bonus in February 2023, posted a .244 batting average with 22 RBIs and five stolen bases in 45 games during the 2023 Dominican Summer League season.

Four players were punished earlier this year as part of the minor leagues’ doping program, which, according to collective bargaining negotiations, now only applies to players assigned to teams in the United States and Canada.

Since DSL players are not part of the minor league collective bargaining unit, MLB has created a similar doping program for them.

One player was banned this year as part of the Major League doping program: Noelvi Marté, a 22-year-old infielder and the most promising young player for the Cincinnati Reds, was banned for the first 80 games of the season after testing positive for boldenone.
