Internal investigation launched into the shooting of Roger Fortson by a deputy sheriff

OKALOOSA COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) – The deputy involved in the May shooting that killed Roger Fortson has been fired following an internal investigation by the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office.

OCSO officials say the investigation found that the deputy’s use of deadly force was objectively unreasonable and violated agency policy.

According to released documents, the investigation was launched immediately after the shooting and is separate from the ongoing criminal investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, which is still ongoing.

The 29-page report describes what prompted the officers to take this action, the step-by-step process of analyzing the bodycam footage and the interview with the officer involved, Eddie Duran.

The Sheriff’s Office released the findings and facts as well as Sheriff Aden’s response.
