The Buffalo Bills sign a player who has never played football

Olympic gold medalist Gabe Steveson is undeniably one of the most impressive and accomplished athletes on the planet, winning an Olympic gold medal in wrestling in Tokyo. But in a shocking twist, it looks like he’ll be trying his talents in a completely different sport, signing with the Buffalo Bills to try football.

The Buffalo Bills announced Friday that they are signing Gabe Steveson to allow him to try his hand at a new sport. Steveson will practice with the team’s defensive linemen, and he admitted that it was actually the first time he wore a pair of cleats.

“I’ve been fortunate to compete at the highest level of competition in my sport, but I’m looking forward to the challenge of seeing how my wrestling skills can translate to football,” Steveson said according to ESPN. “I thank Coach (Sean) McDermott, (general manager) Brandon Beane and the Buffalo Bills organization for giving me this opportunity.”

Obviously, Steveson has a lot of work to do if he wants to carve out a true NFL career, but he’s clearly an elite athlete with plenty of raw strength. We’ll have to see if the Bills can make a football player out of him.
