England and Durham bowler Brydon Carse has been banned from all cricket matches for three months for betting offences.

The 28-year-old, who was named in the World Cup squad six months ago, was given a 16-month ban – 13 months of which were suspended – following an investigation by the Cricket Regulatory Authority.

Carse, who signed a contract with the England centre-back in October, admitted allegations of placing 303 bets on various cricket matches between 2017 and 2019, although not on matches in which he himself took part.

He will be suspended from all cricket matches immediately and until August 28. However, provided he does not commit any further anti-corruption offences over the next two years, he will not face any further penalties.

Carse said in a statement on Durham’s website: “Even though these bets occurred several years ago, that is no excuse and I take full responsibility for my actions.”

“I would like to thank the ECB, Durham Cricket and the PCA for their support during this difficult time for me.

“I will work hard over the next 12 weeks to make sure I can repay that support on the field when I am able to play again.”

An ECB spokesman said: “We take these matters extremely seriously and do not tolerate any breach of anti-corruption laws in cricket. We support the Cricket Regulator’s decision and its consideration of the mitigating circumstances in Brydon’s case.
