Police arrest “thong thief” who allegedly stole underwear worth $14,000

Police have finally arrested an Arizona woman they called a “thong thief,” the Arizona Republic, part of the USA TODAY Network, reported Thursday.

Leticia Martinez Perez, 24, is suspected of stealing more than $14,000 worth of underwear from Victoria’s Secret stores in west Phoenix in nine separate incidents between November and March, police records show.

Perez was arrested by Glendale police on May 15.

“No more panty revenue for them,” Glendale Police posted to Xformerly known as Twitter, following the arrest of Perez, who allegedly admitted to selling the underwear for profit.

The series of thefts

The first documented theft occurred on November 29 at the Desert Sky Mall near 75th Avenue and Thomas Road – where all of the Phoenix incidents occurred, according to police records.

According to police, Perez continued to steal from the Phoenix location on January 10 and twice on January 23, January 26, January 31, February 1 and March 8.

The most recent theft was reported on March 20 at the Arrowhead Mall near 75th Avenue and Bell Road in Glendale.

According to the police report, Perez committed the thefts in Phoenix alone, but had help in the Glendale incidents.

Glendale police made contact with that individual, identified only as a man, after matching his face to surveillance photos provided by the Glendale business. Police reported the man confirmed that he and Perez were in the photos.

He told police he did not remember the incident and did not know what Perez did with the stolen underwear, police records say. He told them he assumed Perez received money for the stolen items.

The “thong thief” confesses

According to police records, Perez confirmed to police in an interview after the Miranda broadcast that she was the person in the still photographs in each of the nine incidents.

The first theft, in November, came about because someone told Perez that there weren’t many employees working at the Victoria’s Secret store in Desert Sky Mall. That fact made the store an easy target, she said in police documents.
