Multiple animals killed in barn fire in Westport

Westport Fire Department

Several animals died Tuesday morning after a fire broke out in a barn in Westport.

According to the Westport Fire Department, a city road surveyor was in the area and spotted smoke coming from the barn on Sodom Road and called 9-1-1 shortly after 7 a.m. He also notified the property owners and worked with them to begin removing livestock from the barn.

About five minutes after receiving the report, firefighters arrived on scene to find “heavy smoke and fire rapidly spreading throughout the attic area of the entire building.”

“There were several attacks around the barn, including the family home,” the fire department said. “Given the lack of personnel and water supplies, firefighters worked quickly to contain the fire and fortunately the fire was contained to the building where it originated.”

Also auxiliary tankers and fire engines from Little Compton and Tiverton, Rhode Island and Dartmouth, Mass. were on site to help with water supplies and staffing. According to the department, tankers were transporting water from Adamsville Pond to the scene of the accident.

“While several animals were rescued by the property owners and firefighters, unfortunately several died in the fire,” the department said.
