Fatal police-involved crash on New Jersey highway under investigation, says AG

The Attorney General’s Office on Monday announced an investigation into a fatal crash in Sussex County involving an on-duty police officer.

Authorities said a preliminary investigation indicates the crash involved an on-duty Franklin Borough Police officer who was driving a service vehicle and collided with another car at the intersection of Route 23 and Walsh Road in Franklin at approximately 10:41 a.m. on Monday, May 27.

A passenger in the car that was struck suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to Morristown Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead early Wednesday morning, authorities said. The driver of the car was treated for his injuries and released.

Authorities said the officer suffered injuries that were not life-threatening.

No identities were released Friday and the Attorney General’s Office said the investigation was ongoing.

The Attorney General’s Office investigates all deaths involving officers acting in their official capacity under a 2019 law. All investigations must be presented to a grand jury to determine if indictments are necessary.
