CDC alert triggered after customs dog at O’Hare Airport goes crazy over maggot-infested bushmeat from Amsterdam flight

A customs dog alerted to a passenger’s luggage coming off an Amsterdam flight on Saturday, and it’s no surprise. The contents were clearly odorous: raw African bushmeat that had been rotting for 30 hours in transit and was infested with maggots. The dog was so excited that it started ripping the plastic wrap as soon as the luggage appeared.

A video of the discovery shows several bags of sealable meat crawling with live pests. Agents can be seen searching two suitcases at the baggage carousel in shock. According to the woman who took the video, the “smell was indescribable.”

@theposhvagabond Over the weekend, the CDC had to be called to report arrivals at the international airport because a dog had raised the alarm in this woman’s bag – you won’t believe what they found in this luggage arriving from Africa @WGN News Chicago #abc7eyewitness #tsa ♬ Original sound – theposhvagabond

Part 2 – Over the weekend the CDC had to be called to the O’Hare International Terminal because an agent found something in passengers’ bags. The dog had noticed the bag before it even hit the conveyor belt – he was completely freaked out and as the bag hit the belt the dog started ripping the plastic. An agent put both bags on the floor and started to open them – what she found was RAW VENISON MEAT FROM AFRICA. The passenger had been on a KLM flight that departed from Africa and had a layover in Amsterdam. This means the raw meat had been sitting there for over 30 hours. When it arrived it was RANIC – the smell is unlike anything you have ever smelled in your life – there were maggots crawling around in the bag – my question now is: how did this get through security the first time, let alone the second time when the smell should have alerted someone in Amsterdam. This is a BIG DEAL – Bushmeat is one of the causes of EBOLA outbreaks – playing with other people’s lives is unacceptable – @wgnmorningnews @wgnnews @abc7chicago

Customs officials identified items such as “cow hide” and a “wrapped cow head” in the bags. The CDC was called because the minimally processed meat from wild animals such as antelope or primates can carry dangerous diseases, including Ebola, which can be transmitted by handling infected animals or eating them. Ebola symptoms can appear between two and 21 days after infection and can cause serious health problems such as bleeding, diarrhea and vomiting. The mortality rate in previous outbreaks has ranged from 25 to 90 percent.

Videos of the ban have been viewed more than 14 million times. Importing bushmeat into the United States can result in a fine of up to $250,000.

In February, a Delta flight, also from Amsterdam, had to turn around because economy class passengers were bombarded with maggots containing rotten fish from the overhead bin.
