World boxing champion Jermall Charlo was arrested after the collision and charged with drunk driving

WBC middleweight boxing champion Jermall Charlo was arrested and charged with three misdemeanors: driving under the influence, eluding and fleeing police and leaving the scene of an accident that caused damage in excess of $200, Chad Rogers said. Pearland (Tx.) Police Public Information Officer. said NBC News on Tuesday.

The arrest occurred Monday evening at 12799 Broadway Street in Pearland, Texas, a suburb of Houston.

Officers arrived at the scene after the collision, Rogers said, and witnessed a verbal altercation between the two parties. Charlo fled the scene in his Lamborghini and refused to stop. The police eventually locked him up and took him into custody. His blood alcohol concentration was more than 0.15%. The legal limit in Texas is 0.08%.

The 33-year-old was taken to the Brazoria County Jail and later released after posting a $9,500 bond.

Charlo is one of the best boxers in the world. The 33-year-old is 33-0 and earned a unanimous decision win over José Benavidez Jr. in a catchweight bout in November 2023. He has not defended his middleweight belt since his unanimous decision win over Juan Macias Montiel in June 2021.

Charlo was scheduled to face Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez in September 2023, but the fight fell through. His identical twin brother and light middleweight world champion Jermell (35-2) stepped in and lost by unanimous decision.
