Video shows anti-Islam activists among the knife attackers in Germany

Videos shared on social media show a man attacking several people with a knife in Mannheim on Friday. The city’s police confirmed the incident and said that three people, including a police officer, were injured. However, there is no further danger to the public as the suspect has been arrested.

Police did not initially provide any information on the severity of the injuries or the identity of those involved, but one of those stabbed was Michael Stürzenberger, a prominent German right-wing political activist and critic of Islam.

Videos of the incident show how Stürzenberger was attacked by the man armed with a knife at around 11:45 a.m. local time on Mannheim’s market square. Stürzenberger had taken part in a rally organized by the citizens’ movement Pax Europa, which describes itself as “anti-Islamization.”

Stefanie Kizina, a colleague of Stürzenberger, told the local reporter of the German newspaper Bild that he would undergo “emergency surgery” after the stab wounds to his face and leg, but that his injuries were not life-threatening.

“An offender is said to have attacked and injured several people with a knife,” says a statement from the Mannheim police. “A firearm was then used against the attacker. The attacker was also injured.”

Rescue and emergency services, including a rescue helicopter, were dispatched to the scene.
