A bicyclist was killed near a South Bay high school after the driver ran a red light and struck the bicyclist and another truck, according to police.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) — According to police, a cyclist was killed in a serious accident in front of Andrew Hill High School in San Jose on Tuesday.

SJPD says a red Chevy Silverado truck speeding westbound ran a red light and hit a bicyclist. The red truck then crashed into a white Ford F-150 pickup truck.

“This red vehicle collided with a bicyclist and then another white truck that was traveling northbound on Capitol Expressway and they had the green light,” SJPD Sgt. Jorge Garibay said. “Unfortunately the cyclist suffered serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.”

According to police, the suspect driver of the red Chevy truck attempted to flee the scene but was soon arrested by a good Samaritan until police arrived.

The driver was taken into custody and was found to be in possession of a privately manufactured firearm, SJPD said.

The accident happened just before 7:30 a.m. at Senter Road and E. Capitol Expressway

It is the 17th traffic-related death in San Jose in 2024.
