Authorities release video of attack on VTA platform in San Jose – NBC Bay Area

WARNING: The above video contains footage that may be disturbing to some viewers.

A 45-year-old man suffered serious injuries on a VTA train platform in San Jose Wednesday afternoon after a suspect wearing an armored vest apparently attacked him without cause, authorities said.

The robbery at the Children’s Discovery Museum Station occurred around 1:15 p.m. when a suspect, later identified as 26-year-old Andrew Perez, allegedly attacked the victim on the platform. Authorities said the two men did not know each other and it was unclear what provoked the attack.

A video of the attack was released by the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Department on Thursday. The video shows Perez approaching the victim, who is standing on the platform with his bicycle. Suddenly, the attacker throws the victim to the ground and begins to beat him and drag him around.

At one point, authorities believe a sharp weapon was used, as the victim had a large gash on his forehead that required seven staples, as well as cuts on his elbow and wrist. However, the sheriff’s office did not find a sharp weapon when searching the scene.

When officers arrived, they found the victim covered in blood from head to torso, the sheriff’s office said. He was treated by paramedics and taken to the hospital in stable condition.

The suspect had already fled when authorities arrived, but they found him barricaded in his home near the station. Perez was eventually arrested and booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail on charges including attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon.

Jail records show Perez is being held without bail and is scheduled to appear in Santa Clara County Superior Court on Friday.
