John Waters was hospitalized after a car accident in Maryland

Cult filmmaker John Waters left a Maryland hospital on Tuesday, a day after he was injured in a car accident.

“Because it hurts when I laugh, I won’t have a witty answer to the fact that I was in a car accident that no one said was my fault,” Waters, 78, wrote in a statement. “I hope you understand. I’m being released from the hospital and everything is fine.”

He gave no further information about the crash.

According to the Baltimore Sun, the front corner of Waters’ car was struck from the side by a pickup truck whose driver ran a red light around 2:40 p.m. Monday in Timonium, about 15 miles north of Baltimore.

Waters was taken to a hospital and checked for chest pain. The driver, a 25-year-old man, was uninjured.

Both cars were destroyed and towed from the scene.

Before Waters commented on his condition, rumors spread on social media that he suffered a head injury and was in critical condition. He made a public appearance at the Maryland Film Festival just last week.

Waters’ films, which include “Pink Flamingos” and “Hairspray,” were filmed and set in Baltimore. Waters, nicknamed the “Pope of Trash,” grew up in the city and later attended the Maryland Institute College of Art.
