Woman arrested and accused of throwing child’s head onto crib at daycare, Nassau officials say – Action News Jax

FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. – A woman was arrested after police say she “forcibly” tied a child to a crib during nap time at a Fernandina Beach daycare center.

Kelly Fullwood, 26, of St. Marys, Georgia, was arrested Thursday on a charge of child abuse without serious bodily harm, according to a police report from the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the report, NCSO responded to the Step By Step Learning Center at 95734 Amelia Concourse on Thursday morning.

A father told an officer that he picked up his three-year-old daughter on Tuesday and that she was wearing a different shirt than the one they were dropped off in and that she had a bruised lip.

The father said he received a message saying the child had had a tantrum, hit his face on the edge of the crib, bruised his lip and had a “minor nosebleed.”

The officer viewed surveillance video of the incident, which shows Fullwood attempting to put the child down for a nap.

Fullwood “used techniques consistent with common practices, such as talking to the child, patting her on the back, and placing a blanket over the upper half of her body,” the police report said.

However, the officer found that Fullwood “used other techniques that she knew or should have known were unacceptable and could cause harm to the child, such as forcibly holding the child to the crib with her arms and forcing the child’s head down,” the report said.

The officer saw Fullwood several times “pushing the child’s head into the crib and holding it there,” the report said.

In the video, the report states, “Fullwood notices that the child’s face is bleeding and takes him to another room to clean him up.”

The NCSO noted in the arrest report that the shirt the child was originally wearing “was not located at the time of this investigation.”

The deputy spoke with Fullwood and read her her Miranda rights. Fullwood’s response was redacted from the arrest report released by the NCSO.

Fullwood “has been practicing this profession for more than seven years and has attended several continuing education courses” and “knew or should have known that her actions could harm the child.”

Fullwood was arrested and remained in the Nassau County Jail as of Thursday evening.
