Williams has now been charged with first-degree murder.

Sergeant Collin Flynn of the Gwinnett County Police Department said adults are charged with murder in these cases if police can prove negligence.

“These cases are always extremely tragic and very difficult for both the officers and the families involved,” Flynn said. Matt Johnson, Channel 2 Gwinnett County Bureau Chief.

According to police, her three children were playing in the room while the loaded gun was on the bed.

According to investigators, her five-year-old took the gun and shot himself at around 6:30 p.m.

“If you commit an act that involves criminal negligence and the child dies as a result of that act, you can be charged with second-degree murder,” Flynn said.

Just hours after Williams’ death, police filed charges of murder, reckless conduct and child abuse.

“Whether it’s a safe or a place in the house where a child can’t reach it or have access to it, it’s up to parents to make sure they’re doing everything they can,” Flynn said.
