E-rickshaw driver arrested for drug-induced robbery and rape of woman

(MENAFN-IANS) New Delhi, May 30 (IANS) An e-rickshaw driver was arrested in the national capital for allegedly robbing and drug-raping a 25-year-old woman, police said on Thursday.

The accused was identified as Mohammad Umer (24).

An official said that on May 26, police received a call about a robbery near Geeta Colony flyover loop, following which a police team rushed to the scene.

When we arrived at the scene of the accident, we found an injured woman with severe bleeding and her son.

“The victim, a resident of Araria district in Bihar, was medically examined and her statement was recorded,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police MK Meena.

The woman told police that she had arrived at New Delhi railway station with her child on May 26 and had to proceed to Punjab to meet her husband.

After getting down at the railway station, she went to Sadar Bazar for shopping.

“At around 6.30 pm, she hired an e-rickshaw to return to New Delhi Railway Station. The e-rickshaw driver offered her something to drink, following which she lost consciousness,” the DCP said.

The e-rickshaw driver then took her to a remote area where he attacked and raped her in the presence of the woman’s three-year-old son.

“When she resisted and tried to call for help, the man hit her on the head with a brick, causing her to lose consciousness again. When she came to, she found that her mobile phone and Rs 3,000 in cash were missing,” the DCP said.

The DCP further said that despite the lack of initial leads, the police worked diligently during the investigation and formed several teams to check around 500 CCTV cameras along the complainant’s to-and-from route.

“The police teams carefully checked CCTV footage from nearby areas and identified a battery rickshaw. A thorough search was launched to trace the owner of the rickshaw, which led to questioning of around 150 e-rickshaw owners/drivers,” the DCP said.

Finally, the focus shifted to a particular e-rickshaw driver named Umer, who lives in a ‘jhuggi’ behind the LNJP hospital.

“Umer was arrested on Wednesday. Subsequently, during questioning, the woman’s mobile phone and the rickshaw used in the crime were seized on the instance of the accused,” the DCP added.
