Man throws rocks on Freeway 110, causes motorcycle crash in downtown Los Angeles

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES (KABC) — A motorcyclist is lucky to be alive after a horrific rock-throwing incident on the 110 Freeway near downtown Los Angeles.

The incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. Thursday morning in the northbound lanes of the highway, just south of Highway 10.

Video shows a man who appears to be homeless picking up rocks and throwing them from the shoulder of the highway near 23rd Street onto the roadway. A motorcyclist appears to have struck a large rock after it was thrown, causing him to lose control, fall and slide down the road.

The footage shows the motorcycle sliding across the road, sparks flying. Moments later, the motorcyclist manages to get up and walk away.

At least two other cars were spotted in the same area, apparently with flat tires due to rocks on the road. One of these drivers had just arrived in the city from LAX airport and was in a rental car.

The photographer who shot the video, Scott Lane of OnScene.TV, said he saw the rock thrower walking away east on 23rd Street near Figueroa.

“The motorcyclist didn’t want to talk on camera,” Lane added. “I noticed he had a GoPro with him. The bike wasn’t rolling, so we didn’t get the accident on camera from that angle. Luckily, he was OK.”

Lane says he did not call 911 but turned his footage over to the California Highway Patrol. He says other drivers, including the motorcyclist, also did not call police to report the incident.

According to the CHP, this is not the first time this has happened.

“Here we have to raise the question of whether we have a victim. We hope he comes forward and then we can move on,” said Officer Roberto Gomez.

The suspect has not yet been found, but authorities say they are searching for him. They also say the motorcyclist has not reported the incident, but they hope he will come forward.

No serious injuries were reported.
