After more than 16 years we have caught the “bad breath rapist”

Since 2007, authorities have been searching for a man known as the “Bad Breath Rapist” who escaped from custody and fled. Now the suspect is back in custody, on the coast opposite where he committed his crime. According to AP, Tuen Kit Lee’s story begins in February 2005, when police say he broke into a waitress’s home in Massachusetts and raped her. “He was eventually identified based on his DNA and his terrible breath,” said a statement from the Massachusetts State Police. The WashingtonPost Lee reportedly posted $100,000 bail and then fled in the middle of his 2007 trial, which ended in a conviction in absentia.

However, MSP investigators recently learned that Lee is hiding in Northern California. Lee’s escape ended Tuesday after he was seen with a female companion leaving a “multimillion-dollar home” near Danville, outside Oakland. Police say Lee initially gave a pseudonym, but after checking his fingerprints, authorities discovered his true identity. “His female companion never knew who he really was after 15 years in California,” the MSP said in a statement.

Lee, who was once seen in America’s Most Wantedis currently being held in California custody until he can be extradited to the East Coast. “There are violent offenders who believe they can commit crimes without being held accountable for their actions,” Chief Inspector Sean LoPiccolo of the U.S. Marshals Service’s Pacific Southwest Regional Fugitive Task Force said in the agency’s statement. “The tireless commitment of law enforcement to finding and apprehending him will hopefully bring peace of mind to the victim and her family.” (More unsolved case stories.)
