Atlanta weather forecast | When to expect storms

ATLANTA — Although storms are rare to start the week, a more widespread period of rain and thunderstorms could occur late Wednesday night or Thursday across north Georgia.

11Alive StormTrackers are tracking a cold front that will push through northern Georgia Thursday evening. Before then, several “mesoscale convective systems,” or storm complexes, will pass through parts of the Southeast. Models suggest some of these could impact parts of the northern Georgia region.

The target for stronger storms Tuesday evening will remain well north of our region. There is a Level 3 severe weather threat for parts of Ohio, Indiana and northern Kentucky. In these areas, strong winds, hail and tornadoes are possible.

By late Wednesday and Thursday, storm complexes will target the Southeast, which is when we have our best chance for storms.

The Storm Prediction Center has identified our area as a Level 2 Severe Weather Threat for the periods of Wednesday/Wednesday evening and Thursday.

Although we are not expecting widespread severe weather at this time, a few stronger storms will be possible. Destructive winds will be the main threat. The risk of hail and tornadoes is also lower.

Here’s a look at one of the storm complexes detected by the models that will impact our region. This model shows an early Thursday morning timeline.

Chances of rain disappear early Friday. Dry weather returns for Mother’s Day weekend, accompanied by a drop in humidity and temperatures!
